Alton is only 15 minutes from Ashbourne and also from Uttoxeter off A50, which links M1 and M6. If you’d like to leave you car behind the nearest train station is Uttoxeter, which connects to the Derby and Stoke main lines.

Things to do - Alton & Local towns
The nearby towns of Ashbourne, Leek and Uttoxeter have so many things to do - local markets, stylish shops, restaurants and are famous for antiques.

It is not actually necessary to leave the village. Alton has plenty to offer in terms of culture, history, architecture, walks, cycle route, pubs, tea-rooms, shops, playground, fresh air and birdsong.

Things to do - Outdoors
The Churnet Valley, Derbyshire Dales and Peak District are perfect for walking, hiking and climbing and getting the maximum fresh air. Nearby for a hike or a stroll is Dimmingsdale on the Staffordshire Way, with its great walker-friendly tea room and restaurant.

There are some of the best safe cycling routes nearby, even one through Alton itself. Check Tissington Trail (Ashbourne to Buxton), Manifold Valley and our own local Churnet Railway.

There’s loads of family-friendly places to visit and things to do and see e.g steam railways and nature reserves. And Alton Towers Theme Park and Splash Landings are, of course, right on the doorstep.

There are many clues to a fascinating industrial past, stately homes, gardens and parks. Famous theatres, opera houses and churches are within reach, and many cultural events and arts festivals take place in the region.
